✫.•° My Review °•.✫

Paloma Parker is a forensic nurse working in a Young Offenders Institute. Her latest case is Ella Cavendish. Ella has been convicted of a terrible crime, one that anyone would find hard to forgive.

The Divine Pumpkin looks not only Ella’s journey of dealing with the ramifications of her crime, it also looks at Paloma’s work and personal life too. As we follow this story it becomes apparent that Paloma and Ella have a lot more in common than first meets the eye.

I’m not saying more with regards to the plot because I don’t want to post any spoilers.

This book has been written extremely well. It’s clear to see that Hemmie Martin has put a lot of time, care and attention into her writing. The way the counselling sessions are written show the knowledge that Hemmie has from her own time doing that job and for me that adds another layer of believability to this book. Hemmie’s writing is incredibly informative, it allows a clear image to be formed in your minds eye as your reading, but at the same time leaves you guessing as to how and what will happen next.

The characters growth and progression is gradual, they seem to learn from the events they face. These characters are well thought out, they have depth, emotion (except maybe Daniel) and are realistic.

The overall storyline is interesting, gripping, emotional and a little bit dark in places. He grabs a hold of your attention from the very beginning and pulls you further in the more you read.

Hemmie has a knack of bringing you a book that will make you question certain aspects of your own life as you read about her characters and stories.

The Divine Pumpkin is a gripping, enjoyable, thought-provoking tale!

✫.•° About The Author °•.✫

This series is getting better and better! The first 2 books were incredibly good but this book… WOW… it truly blew my mind!! What a mind fuck!!

Blood Slave: Made of Scars takes Wynter’s tale to the next level. The twists and turns in this book are so unexpected; there are no warning signs, no clothes, they just creep up on you leaving you feeling… speechless, shocked and utterly mind blown!

I’m not going to say more about the plot/story as I feel it would give away too much!

Eden Wildblood’s writing style is fitting this series perfectly. There is emotion present throughout, it’s informative, and allowed a clear picture of events to form in my mind, so clearly that I felt a part of this story. Like I could reach out and touch the characters. The story is gripping from the beginning and has kept me reading and wanting more.

I cannot wait for Book 4!

I also can’t recommend this series enough. If you want a twisted vampire books this series is for you!

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

Blood Slave: Round 2 continues from where book one left off. We re-join winter in her plight to get free of Slave and her vampire master. Blood Slave: Round 2 is once more a fast-paced plot with plenty of twists and turns. The pace and action keep you gripped and wanting more.

Wynter continues to show her feisty, rebellious nature, she’s very likeable. The things that Wynter is forced to enjoy at Marcus’s hands/desires would break a lesser human.

Marcus is even more dark and twisted. He’s hot but oh so evil. He plays his vampire master role perfectly.

Eden Wildblood has woven a fantastic dark and twisted vampire tale that is completely different to other vampire books. It’s clear that Eden Wildblood has given her work a serious amount of care and thought. Her writing style is thought-provoking, informative and draws you into the centre of the world that she has created.

Blood Slave: Round 2 is a great continuation of this series and I honestly am intrigued to see what is in store for us in book 3. My review of that can be found here.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

As the title suggests this is the beginning of a series. What a beginning it is!!!

Blood Slave is a vampire tale like no other that I’ve read. It is a compelling read from the very start. It’s got action and emotion at every turn. The characters fit the story perfectly. Winter is a feisty female, she has a strong personality, that is clear to see. Marcus is a vampire at the head of an Empire. I found Marcus to be the kind of vampire you’ll either love or hate. Personally, I kinda liked that he was mean, arrogant, moody and closed off to others; maybe that’s just my twisted inner self poking through!

The plot is dark and twisted. It takes you back to how vampires should be; cruel and bite-y, even though they do drink from willing donors/slaves. It draws you in and keeps your attention captive until the very end, and leaves you needing more. It’s clear that Eden Wildblood has put a lot of time, effort, care and emotion into this book, for me it was well worth it.

I’ve loved each and every word and cannot wait to devour book 2!

Asylum 1 by Sian B Claven

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

Hans is a brilliant doctor, sent to an Asylum in the middle of nowhere to continue his post-world war experiments on the insane.

Karen is a bubbly nurse whose sole intention in the world is to do good and help those that cannot help themselves.

Good intentions cross into power hungry mania in this horrific tale of how all their failed experiments come back to haunt them, and how the Asylum holds its own secrets.

“Asylum makes your hair stand on end. This is creepy and dark, yet incredibly fascinating. To delve into the mind of the ‘scientist’ at this asylum is to find sheer madness roiling in those depths, as well as utter self-delusion. The very stones of this madhouse is drenched with horror … a clever and twisted MUST read!” Elaina J. Davidson.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

This is the first book by this author that I’ve read. The question I have now is why? I’ve known that Sian is an author for a while but for some unknown reason I’ve never read one of her books until now. I’ll definitely be going back and reading more!

Asylum I is a freaky, psychological, creepy and dark read! It’s written in a diary form, so it’s clear to see the timeline of events that happened. And what a string of events they are! I’m not going to discuss them for fear of spoiling the surprise for those of you that are yet to read this.

Sian’s writing style grabbed my attention from the beginning and pulled me further and further into the world that she created. Sian’s writing is clear and informative, giving you the details needed to picture each and every scene in your mind, so clearly that you can believe it’s real and you’re there!

The characters are cleverly thought out. Hans is… um… what’s the word I want… oh yeah… crazy, a madman, I suppose it’s a mad scientist/doctor. Sian has created Hans as the doctor who wants to cure the insane. Personally, I think he’s as crazy as his patients! His methods are… different! Hans plays his roll extremely well.

Overall, I loved this book, the plot, the characters, everything! The creepy, disturbing darkness of it appealed and called to the darkness within me, so much so I’ve pre-ordered Asylum II!

✫.•° About The Author °•.✫

Hailing from Johannesburg South Africa, Sian B. Claven has enjoyed stories for all her life, whether she was reading them or making them. She has written for as long as she can remember, but Ensnared is the first book she decided to publish. Moving towards writing more for the horror / paranormal thriller genre, Sian has subsequently published the first two books in The Butcher Books series, Tatum and Kallista. When Sian isn’t thinking of ways to terrify people, she enjoys writing science fiction stories, poetry and rather long and gushy birthday wishes. When she isn’t working on her writing you can find her knitting, scrapbooking, reading, or playing Xbox. Sian previously reviewed for The Blithering Bibliomaniacs and still reviews in her private capacity. She clearly doesn’t know what the words rest and relaxation mean, at least not in the traditional sense.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

Destination Redemption is the third instalment in the beach reads romance series by Toya Richardson. That said it could be read as a stand-alone novel without any issues.

In destination Redemption we meet Erin and Levi, it follows how these two begin, how they deal with their pasts that are still having a big effect on their presents and futures. Erin and Levi have both experienced emotional and traumatic pasts for very different reasons. They are both now dealing with the aftermath of those events. Each has their own demons to face and put to rest.

The question is can they help each other and themselves at the same time? Could Erin be the answer for Levi and vice versa?

Destination Redemption is a story of two tortured Souls, two characters finding their feet, finding their worth, learning how they really feel. It’s a story of friendship, self-discovery. It’s emotional, raw, heartfelt, heart-breaking and heart-warming all-in-one!

These characters show real courage and strength. They show development and growth with every page and everything they deal with. Erin and Levi’s backstories give these two a level of depth I’ve not felt for awhile. It takes both of them time to start to show each other how they really feel. They’re emotions are raw and palpable.

Toya’s writing style carries with it all the emotions needed to make the reader feel every ounce of it. Toya has created a world that draws you in, it grabs a hold of your attention and heartstrings and keeps a very firm hold until the very last word. I couldn’t help feeling like I was there with Levi and Erin (I think I was there cuddling Fiddy most of the time), watching these two as they changed and grew throughout the whole story.

Destination Redemption is an emotional story of love, friendship and learning to cope with past demons. It is full of heartache, deep emotion, fun, love and steamy moments that will have you glued to each and every page.

Bonds by Marie Anne Cope

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

Do you know who hides in your past?

Half the village of Breccan lies dead – slaughtered. All that stands between Antony Cardover and his freedom is his wife, Isabella; or so he believes.
In his wrath at his wife’s adultery, Antony trades his soul for the chance of vengeance. His price? An eternity as a monster – a man bearing a vampire curse. To stop him, the curse must be broken. To break the curse, Isabella and all her descendants must be destroyed. The catch? Only Antony can break the curse.

With Breccan in mourning and Antony on the rampage, only one person can help. Anna Martindale, a witch shunned by the villagers, entombs Antony within a stone sarcophagus, bound by spells and buried in hallowed ground for the rest of time.
Breccan breathes again. Time heals.
That was four hundred years ago.

Seventeenth century spells, however, are no match for twenty first century living. As Ramply Homes moves in, the secret of St. Martin’s churchyard prepares to move out.

As the church is desecrated, the spells that hold Antony break. Soon, Becca Martin, a descendant of Isabella, is plagued by dreams of a time and a man she cannot possibly have known. As her nightmares become real, Becca has no choice but to contact the one person who will be able to help; someone she has not spoken to in a decade – her mother.

Here, Becca discovers the truth about her ancestry and is forced to face up to whom and what she is. Only a wooden box and her gift hold the key to her survival.

Four hundred years ago Antony failed.
He will not fail again.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I purchased a signed copy of Bonds from Marie-Anne Cope at an author event in October 2018. It was in the run-up to this event I first found out about Marie-Anne Cope and her work.

After reading the blurb for Bonds I decided that I needed to read this series. In November me and my fella headed to Wales for a holiday so I grabbed my signed copy of Bonds and took it with me. I read Bonds in a little over a day! Once I started reading I quickly became hooked.

Bonds is the story of Antony Cardover and Becca Martin.

Becca is living life in denial. Why? Because she is a witch, but Becca has spent many years refusing to accept this. Becca’s grandmother tried explaining her ancestry to her but Becca didn’t want to accept it. So she has spent many years denying her ancestry and living a normal life.

Anthony is a very old part of Becca’s family history! Anthony has but one goal to break the curse that was placed on him 400 years ago. And he will stop at nothing to succeed this time!

Bonds is written incredibly well. It shifts effortlessly between Becca’s life now and Anthony’s life 400 years ago. The way the story is told allowed me to build a very clear image in my own mind of the events that will happen in. The way in which the past and the present are explained created a clear understanding of why the characters are the way they are. Anthony’s past explains his behavior both then and now. Becca’s past also gives an insight into why she chose to deny her which ancestry, but now with Anthony on the loose she might have to come to terms with it and finally accepts who and what she really is.

The BONDS series is set in both the seventeenth century and the modern day and follows the unusual relationship between Becca Martin and Antony Cardover. Becca is forced to face up to her birthright as a witch in order to survive and help Antony in his quest to break his vampire curse.

THE MISFITS follows the adventures of four supernatural friends – Achoo, Mina, Boo and Zoe – who are all failing at being what their parents and teachers expect them to be. During their adventures, they learn that being different, being unique, is not just okay, it’s perfect, as they help others in need along the way.

TALES FROM A SCARYGIRL are collections of short horror stories which not only seek to explore what lies beyond the veil that separates this world from the next, but also what darkness lies deep within us, waiting for an opportunity to escape!

She’s forbidden.

Temptation personified in a curvy package of sugar and sin.

My one job is to obey the rules.

Be a good little soldier as the Devil himself raised me to be. Problem is I can’t.

There’s no escaping the chains that bind us, when duty threatens to destroy us both.

✫.•° Book Links °•.✫

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

This is book 3 in the series. From Ashes and Embers is different though because this one is told from Raziel and Jane’s points of view, not Lucifer and Mavi. We still see Lucifer and Mavi but From Ashes and Embers Focuses on Raziel and Jane.

Jane has been hired by Lucifer and Mavi as a nanny to their baby. When Jane arrives there is an instant spark for Raziel. Lucifer warns Raziel not to do anything with Jane, he is not to touch her. An order which Raziel is finding extremely hard to abide by.

Jane comes across as a sweet, happy part fae girl, but looks can be deceptive. Jane is hiding something from them all, something that could get her killed.

Will raziel keep his hands to himself? Will Jane be able to keep her secret? Just what is Lucifer up to this time?

This book hooked me from the very beginning! It is packed full of action and emotion. From Ashes and Embers is dark and twisted, full of suspense and intrigue. It’s like a carefully woven web that unravels before your very eyes. The chemistry between Raziel and Jane is off the charts, however, these two seem like polar opposites!

Claire’s words are remarkable, they convey every emotion perfectly and make you feel as though they are your own. Her writing style feeds you the details as though you’re following a breadcrumb trail, they make you feel as though you need that next crumb.

The plot is well thought out and flows seamlessly throughout. It takes you on an epic roller coaster ride through emotions, the secrets the twists and turns, it’s the kind of ride you don’t want to get off of.

From Ashes and Embers fits this series so well. It was amazing to finally get an insight into Raziel and his life as the Devil’s second-in-command in Hell.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading From Ashes and Embers. I can’t wait to see what Claire comes up with next in this series.

The Haunting Of Alice May by Tony Lee Moral

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

Alice May Parker moves with her family to the sleepy town of Pacific Grove after her Mom dies, but little does she know the strange and terrifying events to come. When she falls into the bay during a kayaking trip, she is rescued from drowning by the mysterious Henry Raphael. Handsome, old fashioned and cordial, he is unlike any other boy she has known before. Intelligent and romantic, he sees straight into her soul. Soon Alice and Henry are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance until she finds out that Henry is not all that he seems. . .

✫.•° Book Links °•.✫

Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon US

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

The Haunting of Alice May is centered around Alice May Parker. Alice and her family lived in Chicago until the death of her mother. After her mother’s death, Alice’s father decides to move to the small and quaint town of Pacific Grove. On top of trying to come to terms with the death of her mother, Alice now has to try and settle into a new place, a new school and make new friends.

In a bid to fit in and mix with these people, she joins a kayaking trip. Sounds like a great idea right? It would be better if Alice wasn’t completely terrified of the water. Whilst in the kayak and mist begins to roll into the bay, the group are told to head for shore. But Alice becomes lost in the mist, where she’s swept into the water. Alice is saved by a mysterious boy who we later learn isn’t exactly what he seems.

The idea for The Haunting of Alice May is really good. It’s a mixture of paranormal, gothic and romance which I feel should be enjoyable for young adults. I liked the idea behind an island for Souls, a bit like purgatory, where they are free to roam. It was different from anything I’ve read so far.

I’m not convinced about the romance aspect of this book as I felt it was a bit too weird and unrealistic. I know it’s only fiction but I found it hard to believe that a 17-year-old girl who found out her boyfriend is really a 100-year-old ghost, the first thing she worries about is how that would impact their relationship. Surely, there should be some kind of shock, disbelief, maybe even a little hint of Fear?

That aspect aside I did enjoy reading The Haunting of Alice May. I think the author has left the odd loose end, which I think could be used to expand this book into a series. If there is a second book then I’d give it a read and see what happens.
