The Twelve by D E McCluskey

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

Sometimes the past can come back to haunt you…

John Rydell was 4000 miles away when he got the phone call from his wife, ‘John there’s someone in the house.’

By the time he was home, tragedy had struck. A tragedy that threatened to engulf him, bringing back long forgotten and repressed memories of his days at university.

Now some of his old friends are dying, one by one. They are found gutted, disembowelled, ruined. There were twelve of them back in university, and there were twelve of them for a reason.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I love reading horror books and it’s been a long time since I read something that actually gave me the creeps, this book did!

This is the first of this author’s work that I’ve read, and I’ll certainly be reading more of his work in the future.

The Twelve follows John Rydell through part of his life. John loses his wife whilst he was on a business trip, his wife’s death is the starting point for a series of gruesome deaths. John slowly begins to connect the dots himself and realises that these deaths are all linked to him and some old university friends.

The Twelve uses flashbacks to give the details needed for you understand what the twelve was. These flashbacks work well and give depth to the overall story, they also give important details that help with understanding the overall plot.

D E McCluskey has done a great job setting this story up and delivering it to his readers. The images that D E McCluskey’s words create are creepy and eerie, whilst being detailed and engrossing. At the beginning there is very little given away but it’s enough to make you curious. I was intrigued to know who or what was going to happen, I wanted to know what else was in store for John and for me as a reader.

D E McCluskey’s writing style is informative, graphic, and compelling, it pulls you in and makes you want to stay, makes you feel as though you need to keep reading.

Most of the time that I spent reading this was in my room on the third floor of my house in the dark or near dark stop. I found myself on more than one occasion pausing and looking over my shoulder! Or listening to see if I had heard a noise from elsewhere in the house!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the 12 and I look forward to discovering more of this author’s works.

I think that anyone who loves horror would find this book a great read, but I also think that fans of thrillers might find this book thoroughly enjoyable too.

✫.•° Author Bio °•.✫

I began writing in 2011, mainly for my own enjoyment. I began by making up funny, rhyming stories, with a horror-based theme running through them. I wrote them mostly for my daughter who was only four years of age at the time.

These rhymes where popular with my friends and family and someone mentioned that I should get them down in a book. That’s when the idea for a comic sprung into mind.

I scoured the internet and met a fantastic illustrator. I then commissioned him to illustrate this comic and Interesting Tymes was created. This is an anthology of short horror stories, all written in rhyme, but suitable for children to read too.

This was so popular with friends and family and further afield, that I decided to make another. Interesting Tymes X 2 continued where the first one left off, with Edward D’Ammage introducing another six horror tales.

From then I got the bug. I began to expand my series of rhyming tales, taking the original themes, and making them into longer stories. Using a different illustrator, I wrote, commissioned, and produced my first, short, horror comic. Wooden Heart.

I then began to write a zombie serial called The Few, we are currently on # 3 of what will be seven. #4 is currently in production.

I then embarked on a more ambitious project. My first graphic novel. Doppelganger is over 100 pages long and is a dark psychological tale of a man descending into madness.

Next up came DeathDay presents. This is a 4-part comedy tale about three demons in Hell who forget about Satan’s DeathDay. It has a 15 rating as the imagery in the back is rather graphic and gory, while the interactions between the demons is comedic and light.

Then I wrote and produced another full graphic novel. This one is called Olf. This is a children’s tale about Fr Christmas and his reindeer. I wrote this as I wanted to balance my brain between the darkness of Doppelganger my desire to wrote something that my daughter could read.

With a love of sci-fi and the old-style Flash Gordon type cliff-hangers, I wrote a series of tales about an adventurer called Mace Masoch, and his sidekick Miss Ninetails. The style of this comic was adult orientated, with buxom women and muscular men. #2 is currently in production.

After Mace, I went back to the list of my old rhyming tails and selected a longer, rhyming tale to produce in the same style as Interesting Tymes. This was to be a vehicle for my leading character Edward D’Ammage to run with his own titles. Edward D’Ammage Presents: The Wedding is in the same vein as Interesting Tymes although it has a different illustrator.

After this I did a collaboration with leading ‘extreme horror’ author Matt Shaw to serialise his best-selling novel, Sick B*stards, into a graphic novel. This has been a successful venture up to now, even though only #1 is available yet. #2 is currently in production.

I produced a short zombie inspired short horror comic, working with the illustrator I used for Wooden Heart, and produced Three Days in the City. This is a zombie-esque tale set in Liverpool. It’s a one-shot story and sells really well in conventions, mainly due to the location.

Bringing back my love of Christmas and my love of old comics like The Beano, I partnered up with a fantastic artist called Joe Matthews, and we produced one of my proudest pieces of work. We undertook the mammoth job of re-writing Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, completely in rhyme. Joe did the artwork in his fantastic Beano-esque style. This has been my best seller to date.

In all the time writing, I had also written several short horror stories. I took the decision to bring these together into another anthology, and teaming up again with the illustrator for Doppelganger, I produced Short Sharp Shocks. Six short horror/thriller tales all introduced by a skeletal game show host.

My next project is still in production. It’s a graphic novel about a female super-villain with a good side to her. Its called DreamCatcher. Originally, I was going to produce this as three parts, but decided that I would wait until all three parts are complete before bringing it out as a full graphic novel. Parts 1 & 2 are complete, while 3 is just about to be commissioned.

Writing graphic novels, I found long and laborious to do. I have no talent for drawing, but I do see the panels in my head and am very good at articulating them to the illustrators. But, I found myself increasingly at the mercy to how fast the artist work. I am a fast writer, and I wanted the artists to work as fast as I did. It was also proving costly, as good artists do not come cheap. I was working with a good illustrator friend on a graphic novel I had written called Thirteen. She had produced ten pages of top-notch work for me, but she was worried about the length of time it was taking her to complete the pages. She loved the story she was working on, so she convinced me to turn it into a full-length novel. She told me that the scope of the graphic novel would probably bankrupt me anyway. So, I converted the comic script and produced my first full novel. I changed the name of it to The Twelve and it is currently selling well on Amazon, and from me via my Facebook page.

Stirred on by the success of The Twelve, I teamed up with a local musical historian who I used to work with back in the days of playing in bands around Liverpool. We came up with a concept about a historical tale about the old Liverpool music scene. He did a load of research into the swing music scene in Liverpool after the war, and my second novel came to life. In The mood… For Murder was released, to excellent reviews. Bit things are in the pipeline for this book, least of all, a sequel is in the works.

Next up came my third novel, CRACK. This is a brutal story about one mans descent into addiction after a road traffic accident that wasn’t his fault. This is a specialised tale and is not always everyone’s cup of tea. Although it is selling well, the reviews, although good, are slow in coming.

Next up I am hoping to release Z: A Love Story by Christmas (or shortly after). A zombie tale inspired by one of my rhyming stories in Interesting Tymes X 2. Then I have written and am currently editing a sci-fi Jack the Ripper inspired tale entitled Timeripper. I have also written and am also editing a trilogy of books; Glimmer Trilogy. This is three books set in a fictional land, with magic and swords. I have written this for the YA genre. Lastly, I have re-written my Olf graphic novel into a children’s novel, I am currently getting illustrations completed for this, with a look to release it for Christmas 2019. This will be the first in a series of 5 novels, all set in the same land.

In my spare time, I work as a computer engineer, I am a full-time father to my daughter Grace (who will be bringing out her own children’s book in 2019, entitled The Hangry Hamster), I also do stand-up comedy around the north-west of England.

I honestly have no idea how to put my thoughts on to paper for this review!

It’s taken me a few days to process my thoughts enough to attempt this review. Even now I’m not sure that my review is actually going to do this book the justice it deserves!

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of R.G, I devoured her other two books and have been waiting eagerly for her next book. When I was offered the chance to read this as an ARC I jumped at it.

Finding My Fight is powerful, emotional and addictive. The book captured my attention immediately and the more I read the more I became lost in the pages and the story that was unfolding.

Finding My Fight deals with a sensitive subject but R.G has written it extremely well and with considerable care, making it a very emotional and unputdownable read.

The characters are well thought out and they each play key roles throughout the story. No one is portrayed to be perfect, everyone has flaws and that makes each one more endearing. These characters have managed to climb their way into my heart and will remain there for a very long time. It’s so easy to love these characters.

R.G’s writing style is as epic as I remembered. R.G has created Ginny and Nate’s world seamlessly. Her writing style grabs a hold of your attention and pulls you right into their world and keeps you there until the very end, even then getting to the end will not sever the ties between them and you. The emotion that R.G has put into her writing is palpable and it will take you on a roller coaster ride that you will not want to get off of!

I waited patiently for this book and now I’ve read it I’m not ready for it to be over!

If you want an emotional roller coaster ride that will tug at your heartstrings, then I cannot recommend this book enough!

I’m not going to lie this book broke me!

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I finished reading this book about 3 hours ago. When I finish reading it I just sat staring at my Kindle in shock! Let me just say, I did NOT see that coming!

OK, so that I give nothing away I’m going to dive into reviewing everything not plot related, I can’t post spoilers!

A Princess’s Duty for me was fantastic. It starts off with a gentle pace but picks up speed as it progresses. This story is full of twists, turns and a whole heap of emotions too. The story flows smoothly from page to page.

Characters have charm and characteristics that will grab a hold of you and suck you right into their story. It makes you feel a part of everything; all the good and the bad. I felt the emotions coming from these characters as though it was my own. Each of them has a unique knack that will make you love or loathe them, some in equal measures.

Sloane’s writing style once more captured my attention and held it until the bitter end; and what an end it is! It’s so easy to see and feel the world that has been created for these characters around yourself as you read. I felt like I could have reached out and touched everything as I was reading. There’s a natural feeling flow to Sloane’s words, it’s almost as if it’s been effortless to write.

I’ve enjoyed reading A Princess’s Duty and I cannot wait for book 2.

Is it finished yet Sloane?

✫.•° About Sloane Murphy °•.✫

My name is Sloane, but people call me a variety of names, particularly after they read my books. If you’ve read them, I’m sure you can use your imagination to work them out. I was born in England and have lived in small towns and cities ever since.

My husband, Chris, is the most supportive person in my life. Without his love, help and patience I wouldn’t be where I am today. Living my dreams, with him by my side and our crazy fur baby creating chaos.

At school I drifted through, achieving average grades. I fell into administration and sales jobs, thinking that I couldn’t really do anything else, despite always wanting more.

I’d been writing poetry and song lyrics since the age of about 11, but my love of reading has always been strong. In 2012, I got my first kindle and discovered the works of Samantha Young, Addison Moore, Amanda Hocking, Tijan, A.E Murphy and many many more.

In 2015 I stumbled into the indie world by accident. I emailed a certain indie author after falling head over heels for her books, and she became one of the best friends I will ever have. She’s a gladiator! But she pulled me in, and took me to my first book signing. She encouraged me to start my blog. She encouraged me to put my art out into the world, first with teasers & covers.

Then when I finally told her about my stories, she encouraged me to put them out there. Between her and the one I love the most – thank you, Lauren Rowe – (my twinnie, and my best friend) I found the confidence to put myself out there, and the rest, as they say, is history.

This is a new to me author, so I had no idea what to expect from this book.

The cover and the synopsis both piqued my curiosity and made me want to read this story to find out more about the characters.

The story is well thought out and has an easy to follow flow. Each scene leads into the next effortlessly, as the story progresses the plot becomes more intriguing. There are twists and turns in all the right places and there’s never a dull moment.

The characters are incredibly realistic, they have flaws and feelings just like we do, and they come through in book. Most of the characters are extremely lovable; even the bad guys in a love-hate kind of way.

The characters and the plot in Returned come across as a very cleverly written tangled web that unravels before the readers eyes. The plot and characters will draw you in from the get-go and they will keep you right alongside of them until the very end, and then you’ll want more, I know I do!

Considering this is the first of this authors books that I’ve read, I wasn’t disappointed, and I’ll definitely be looking at reading more of her work in the future.

I found Keeley’s writing to be very informative, clear and jam packed with emotion that her characters deserve. She gives her readers a clear picture of what is going on and will make you feel as though you are part of the story.

I have enjoyed reading Returned and I look forward to my next encounter with Keeley’s words, worlds and characters.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

Up to this point, I’ve never attempted to read or listen to any of the books by this author. When the opportunity to listen to date night came up I thought why not.

I downloaded date night from, with the code given to me by JF Holland for nothing more than an honest review.

I’ve listened to this audiobook twice now, there are 2 reasons for this; firstly, because I listened to this at work and I was afraid I may have missed some parts, and secondly because I enjoyed it so much the first time.

Date Night is a story about reconnecting, not with old friends but with the love of your life, your wife, your best friend and your children.

Dan and Lauren have been best friends forever, they’ve been married for 14 years and have 2 children. Dan has been working longer and longer hours, whilst Lauren and the kids have been living their lives without him. Until one day Dan seems to realise that his wife and kids’ lives are passing him by. He resolves to change that fact. But he has no idea how.

Dan starts by taking some time off work before enlisting some help and advice from his mother in law.

We follow Dan and his journey to try and rekindle is marriage and his family life. It’s not going to be an easy task. As Dan begins do show attention to his family and wife, Lauren begins to get suspicious as to why Dan is suddenly behaving this way.

The characters in Date Night are realistic and lifelike, they are easy to relate to and their situation is something I know does or can happen in real life. I think that JF Holland has created a very realistic story, her characters behave in a way that is relevant to the situations they are faced with also they all seem to develop the more they endure and the further into this story we get.

I felt that the story was well thought out, it is easy to read/listen to and flows well. This book has just about every emotion I can think of in it, so be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster ride, one that you won’t want to get off!

I felt that Date Night is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.

If you love contemporary romance with some steam thrown in then this is the book for you.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

This is only the second book of the Katie’s that I’ve read. The first was The Crow Man.

I’ve got to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Because of my love are vampires and the supernatural I was more than a little excited to see this released! I read it in about 6 hours too.
Bathory Academy is the school/college supernaturals, Bathory is no ordinary college, it has been home to some of the most notorious vampire families in the world. Now it has become the home of Alexander Augustine.

Alexander is there because he’s only just emerging as a vampire and had an incident with a human that meant he had nowhere else to go. He was taken to Bathory by his grandfather. Bathory has everything he needs to complete his emergence into the vampire world.

The plot, I thought was good, it flows seamlessly through every scene. I love the idea that there is a school/college for the supernatural. But it’s not just the supernatural, there are students there that aren’t quite supernatural, but they identify with being supernatural, for example:

“The rest of the academy, which is made up of
approximately a hundred students, are vampeers, those who identify themselves as vampires, or otherkin, those who identify themselves with other supernatural beings. They are sons and daughters of the night; they all have extraordinary creative, technological, scientific or sporting talents; empaths, artists, poets, alchemists, athletes, creatives–those who see beyond the boundaries and limitations of being human. In most cases, there is some distant familial vampire blood connection, but not enough to fill them with the same vital needs as true vampires.”

Katie M John has set up this world extremely well. Within the walls of the Bathory Academy, there is an entire world. There appears to be a very clear divide between the students; they appear to be divided into groups and each group appears to have its own structure that is respected.

Each character has their own role to play and the more of the story I read the more I discovered about them, they interact well together, and the relationships are very realistic, easy to identify with from when I was at school (many, many years ago)!

Alexander, for me, was really easy to identify with. I’m sure most of us have been in a situation or 3 where we felt completely out of place, or where we don’t really belong, to me that’s how Alexander came across. Not only is he trying to find his feet is a vampire but also within the Academy too, not an easy feat.

Katie M Johns writing is fabulous. She has set the scene well, she has given each of her characters complex and realistic personalities. I love how the more I read the more I discovered about the families, the characters and their backgrounds. I felt as though I was being led through the story by a breadcrumb trail.

Vampire Hearts sets up the beginning of this series well, it gives the detail that is needed to allow the reader to create a firm and clear image of the story and its characters. It is a great start to this series and I think it will get better with each book.

I cannot wait for book 2, and to see what is in store for these characters next.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

Where do I start? I’ve had Descent on my TBR list for a while now, but I just never seemed to get round to reading it. Then I saw that Sloane was looking for some people to review for her. So I thought “now’s my chance”. So I did. And boy am I glad I did.

I finished reading this at 1.20am on February 15th on my break at work and I was genuinely disappointed that I didn’t have book 2 to continue with straight away. Anyways I digress… back to my review…

Descent is written in dual POV. It goes between Addie and Xander. Each chapter is clearly labelled so there is no confusion at any point. I really enjoyed the dual POV, I thought it added more depth to the overall story.

I found the characters to be well developed and realistic too; well, as real as a Vampyr can be. They are not portrayed to be perfect, they have their flaws which helps with the realism of them. The bad guys play their roles well and I found that I both loved and hated them for it.

Addie is a very determined young woman, she has her dream of being in the Red Gaurd and is hell-bent on proving herself more than capable; even though no females have ever been in the Red Guard before.

Xander is a Vampyr who is trying to keep his real feelings hidden and also trying to protect Addie. Xander knows more than he is letting on about Addie, I can’t help but wonder if this will eventually come back and bite him on the arse though!!

The plot is enjoyable, easy to become immersed in and holds you captive until the end, where your left wanting more. I felt completely surrounded by Addie, Xander and their thoughts, feelings and emotions throughout.  Just when I thought I was starting to figure out where we were heading, BAM, I would encounter another twist/turn that I hadn’t expected.

Descent has action, romance, humour and plot twists throughout, and Yes there is a cliffhanger ending!!

For me, this was a great starting point, and I for one am hooked! I cannot wait to start book 2!!

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I read Descent in a little over a week & had my review written within a day of finishing it. Then I began reading Crash knowing that I would have book 3, Soar shortly after. I’m so glad I did.

At the end of Crash, I was left reeling, I honestly couldn’t believe that Sloane could do such a thing right at the end! Yes, there is a cliffhanger, but what a cliffhanger it is!!!

The characters in this book are so multi-dimensional. The ones you think you hate when you first meet them, have a knack of growing on you & before you know it you think they’re great & you’re rooting for them.

Addie is a strong, stubborn, in woman. Her strength & willpower are to be tested to the absolute limit in the book. Xander has my heart & has completely ruined me in this book!

I found Crash to be darker, more emotional & more twisted than Descent. But the world that Sloane has created continues to grow with each page & each book. Crash has helped to clarify some of the issues raised in Descent but I have been left with just as many new questions; that I know are answered in Soar book 3 because I’ve already read it 😉

The characters become further entangled with each other & allies found where you wouldn’t expect them to be. This book is a complex twisted web of details that are only unravelled when Sloane decides to tell you. The way Sloane writes shows the passion she has for these characters & this story, as well as the emotion & thought that has been put into creating such an enchanting world & collection of people.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

So book #3 of The Immortal Chronicles… I read this straight after book #2 & I’m so glad I had this ready to read. I’m going to try & keep this spoiler free. What to say… Firstly you MUST read books 1&2 before reading Soar.

Soar throws us right back to where Crash left off. We rejoin Addie as she tries to deal with the events of book #2. We watch as she is given no choice but to join her family & take her rightful place in it.

These characters are amazing. They are so lovable & so realistic. Their emotions are so strong & consuming both for them & for us as readers. It’s clear to see just how & why they feel the way they do, everything about the characters draws you in & allows them further into your heart.

The overall plot is an intricate, tangled web of action, drama & details that is carefully unravelled before our eyes. Soar grabs a hold of your attention from the very beginning & pulls you further into the story & doesn’t let you go until the very end. Which then leaves you wanting more!

Sloane has written a powerful, beautiful, descriptive piece of awesomeness. Seriously this book is so good! As I was reading I was trying to guess what was coming up, but I never managed to guess correctly. Just when I thought I had an idea; BAM; I was met with an unexpected twist.

Even though this is book 3, I feel like those characters & this author have a lot more to give. I’m intrigued to see just where we will be taken in book #4. Soar does end on a cliffhanger, compared to the cliffhangers at the end of the first 2 books, this one is EPIC!!! 🙂 No way in my wildest dreams did I see it coming!

My initial thoughts at the end of Soar were WTF? Sloane, how the hell could you do that? Did you really end it there? Where in the name of all that is holy is book #4? I NEED Book #4!

Sloane, you’re evil, EVIL I tell you!

Honestly peeps if you haven’t read this series, please do. But be prepared for a ton of emotions & heartache.

Awesome Book Sloane! Can’t wait for book #4.

Watching her move on.

Watching her change.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I have been sat (im)patiently waiting for this book ever since l finished reading book 3. I wanted to read this book so bad but at the same time I didn’t because I know it’s the end of the series & I don’t want to say bye to these characters, but I have now 🙁 I honestly did not see that ending coming, I was most definitely not prepared for that ending.

It’s safe to say that after reading books 1-3 I had become quite attached to these characters, I mean really attached, but Xander & Addie more than the others. I thought Sloane had destroyed my heart in book 3 but I was wrong, so wrong! Now however I know she has, she has literally destroyed my heart, shredded it into tiny little pieces!!! I cried, twice!! -I’m saying no more for fear of spoiling the story for those who haven’t read it yet!

These characters have grown & flourished in every book & Rapture is no exception. Addie continues to adapt & grow with every challenge she faces. In book 1 I never would have thought Addie would be willing or capable of being a Princess but she steps up to the challenge & I think she nails it!

All of the characters; I won’t name names just in case you haven’t read the other books in the series; play their roles exceedingly well. They all bring different elements to the overall story & help to weave a spellbinding tale for us readers to devour.

The overall plot is not what I was expecting to happen. There are twists & turns that I didn’t see coming, & when you least expect them. I felt like there were a couple of parts that were skipped over, they were mentioned after the event happened as opposed to us experiencing the event alongside the characters. It doesn’t really take away from the story as a whole, it just made it feel a little rushed in those particular places. The ending is… one hell of an ending! As much as it wasn’t what I thought would happen, it is right, it fits perfectly. I fully understand the reasoning behind the ending especially as I know Addie.

Sloane’s writing has been a pleasure to read once again. Her writing creates a world that sucks you in & holds you captive until the bitter end. You experience everything with these characters as if you are physically alongside them. You cheer them on, fear for them, cry for them & your heartbreaks right along with theirs!

I’m truly sad to say goodbye to this lot. But I’m excited to see what Sloane comes up with for us readers next.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

I finished reading this book on Tuesday, now it’s Wednesday and I’m trying to write my review. This is going to be a hard review to write!

This book totally blew me away. It was amazing from start to finish! The plot flows from scene to scene with ease. Sam Popes past and present are all intricately woven together throughout this story. The Night Shift is extremely well written, it was clear to me Mr Enright has put a lot of time, love, energy and research into the details and events in this book.

The style of writing that the author uses to show the past events works well and adds to the overall plot, it helps to create a level of understanding about how Sam’s past is affecting his present. Mr Enright’s writing style allows me to create a very clear image in my own mind of the scenes that I am reading. It is very easy to feel like part of the story, as though everything is unfolding around me. I love how Mr Enright manages to create a world which feels so realistic.

The characters are all well developed and multidimensional, they all interact and grow as the story progresses. All the characters in The Night Shift play key roles in the story. Sam Pope has survived so much, and his life just seems to get more and more complicated. I cannot even begin to understand how he has survived and come through the other side of the things he has endured.

I have thoroughly loved every single page, I am incredibly pleased that Mr Enright gave me the opportunity to read this book before the rest of the world. I cannot wait to see what is in store next from Mr Enright.

If you want a gripping, thrilling, action-packed story, I strongly recommend grabbing yourself a copy of the night shift.

The Night Shift has been an emotional, action-packed, thrilling and engrossing book from the very beginning.

Well done Rob and thank you for giving me this opportunity!

A huge 5 stars from me.

Jersey Girl by J.A. Heron

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

She lost her parents.

She lost her sister.

She lost her home.

She lost her sobriety.

She lost her head.

Now she’s on an uphill battle to find herself, once more.

Will love help, or hinder the fight?

Sometimes, deciding who you are, means deciding who you’ll never be again.

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

This is a really good book, it’s the first of JA Heron’s books that I have read and it won’t be the last.

I found myself completely immersed in Kat and Benny’s lives. These 2 characters so very real and as if they were actual friends. Kat and Benny come from very different backgrounds, but that doesn’t stop them from being best friends. Kat has dealt with so much in her life so far. When did things become too much for Kat, Benny has no choice but to step in and help save her best friend.

This book was nothing like what I was expecting. It’s clear to see that the author of put a lot of thought, emotion and research into her writing. She deals with a real but hard-hitting issue but she does it in a way that shows consideration and sensitivity whilst allowing us to understand just what Kat is dealing with.

This book has so much packed into it; a great storyline, love, heartbreak, friendships, loss and sadness. It also shows just how strong some people really are!

I’m really glad I had the chance to read Jersey girl and I’m looking forward to discovering more of JA Heron’s work.

Unleashing Demons by C.J. Laurence

✫.•° Blurb °•.✫

Being supernatural doesn’t make you invincible and it certainly doesn’t make you immune to emotional baggage.

On their annual three-month vacation from Hell, Commanders of Hell Azazel and Balthazar end up in a quiet village in the English countryside. The bickering siblings put themselves at odds when Balthazar decides he wants to end their demonic curse and become human by finding his demi-soul—the one who completes him. With their ancient history coming between them again, the two brothers cross paths with Kyla Marshall—a woman whose own past is steeped with horror.

Kyla finds something deep inside her resonating with the unstable duo. When her own festering rage and fury creeps to the surface, she finds herself on a one-way street to bloody revenge. Along the way, she discovers she has her own standing in the supernatural world, and such talents only make her thirst for justice greater.

By the time Azazel and Balthazar realise what’s going on, it’s too late and Kyla’s hands are already dirty. However, an unexpected enemy has been watching from the side-lines and is ready to take full advantage of Kyla’s uncontrollable power.

Can Lucifer’s best stop fighting with each other long enough to save the girl?

✫.•° My Review °•.✫

This is the first of CJ Laurence’s work that I’ve read. Until she was announced as a signing author at the #DarkerSideOfFiction2018 signing I had never actually heard of her. So, when I was offered the chance to read this for her I said yes.

The cover both appealed to me and intrigued me. The blurb also peaked my interest and made me decide to give it to read.

I like how CJ has put a short section entitled Reader Information, explaining the POV and use of the word magick not magic. It clarifies points which could cause some people issues.

Unleashing demons introduces us to Kyla; she’s the lead female. She’s feisty and has had a pretty rough past. I cannot imagine how she even begun to deal with what’s happened to her.

After an unfortunate accident involving a cigarette we meet Tom and Ben Worthington; or should I say Balthazar and Azazel. These two are Lucifer’s most trusted demons, they are here on their 12-week vacation, looking for women and/or trouble.

I found the characters to be incredibly engaging. They interact well together and grow as the plot unfolds. The more I read the more I begun to understand the feelings and thoughts of Kyla. She deals with a lot, I don’t think that a lesser character would have been able to deal with everything that is suddenly being thrown at her.

The overall story isn’t one of love, it’s one of revenge and in some ways self-discovery too.

This isn’t a book for the faint-hearted It has its share of violence and bloodshed. It’s also jam-packed with demons, witches, werewolves and even Lucifer himself makes an appearance.

CJ Laurence’s writing style has a natural feeling pace. The start is a little slow before building up as the action and events unravel before our very eyes!

I’m pleasantly surprised with what I have found within this book. I’m intrigued to know if we will see any more from Kyla in the future.

I’m now looking forward to reading more of CJ Laurence’s work!

If you love a darker, supernatural story and don’t mind some violence and bloodshed then I’d say give this story a chance.

✫.•° About The Author °•.✫

I’d love to say that writing has always been in my blood and I owe my strange imagination to a relative I barely knew, but as far as I know, I’m a one of a kind from my family (in more ways than one!!)

So what do I love to write about? Well, whatever takes my fancy to be quite honest. I’m not one to write for the market – I write for myself, what comes from the voices, sorry – muses, in my head, and what I think are unique twists in this repetitive world.

As a result, you can find me scattered across genres from steamy romance to dark fantasy and horror. My only hesitance at the moment is sci-fi but I’m sure I’ll tackle it some day!

Conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the darker side of human nature fascinate me. I adore mythology and ancient history too, and also (only when I’m feeling intellectual) tend to dip my toes into quantum physics to better understand theories of the supposed impossible.

I am a thirty-something mother to an eleven year old boy, 3 cats, 20 fish, and 4 snakes.

This is a picture of moi with my long suffering partner, Steve. We’ve been together since 2009, so have weathered some storms but he’s always there to keep me grounded which is something I very much need!
